According to Descoeudres, for many years this area had been described as the quay wall of the harbour.
The idea of a seawall is likely to go back to the 1950s, when it was discovered during clearing work under Maiuri’s direction.
If this were indeed the walls of the Pompeii harbour, then it would have been ten metres above sea-level.
A trial trench excavated in June 1998 proved this idea to be false.
The reason for the rings, very similar to ancient mooring rings, must remain unknown.
