According to Parslow, this counter originally had decorative heads built into its street facade.
Even as far back as 1794, thieves successfully extracted one of the two sculpted heads immured in the counter of this bar/shop.

According to Fiorelli in PAH
This past night they stole one of the two heads remaining in the counter of the shop of the hot drinks, adjoining the city gate; the stolen was one that represented a woman.
They had tried to remove the other, but it is believed that they had run out of time, because they had needed to break it from the chain that it was attached to.
Sig. La Vega has decided to remove it, which he should.

According to Parslow “… theft had long been the biggest fear in leaving anything in situ and had influenced the decision to rebury the ruins in the early years.
Despite the construction of guard houses and the posting of
additional sentinels, however, thieves successfully extracted one of the 2
sculpted heads immured in the counter of a shop (reg. VI.1.2), by the Porta di Ercolano in 1794”.
