According to Jashemski, “The large pillar at the west end of the lower part of the portico, camouflaged by a large painting of Mars and Venus, was actually a castellum aquae which had inserted in its top a reservoir (lined with good signinum) of a three-cubic-meter capacity.
The water collected from the roof of the triclinium and the portico provided for the fountains, the elevation making possible the jets.
The construction of the castellum aquae obstructed the view of the fine shrine, one of the best preserved at Pompeii”.

According to Peters, in this painting the deities, Ares and Aphrodite, are sitting in front of a hexagonal column.
A large bowl is standing on top of it. A tree forms part of the rural sanctuary.
In the background, there is mountain scenery.
