I.11.10 Pompeii. The Jashemski excavations in the garden/vineyard area.

Linked to I.11.11. Excavated 1953, 1958, 1960 and 1964.

Part 1      Part 2      Part 3: The 1964 Jashemski excavations

After the 1960 Scavi excavations of the site were completed, the excavators were still not clear what the open area had been used for.

Wilhelmina Jashemski suspected that it had been a vineyard, and in 1964 was encouraged to begin excavations to prove her theory by the Scavi authorities, with their full co-operation.

After she had excavated the entire area, it became clear that the garden area had been a vineyard, with 32 grapevine roots and two trees found.

These photographs chronicle that excavation and the processes used in it.

I.11.10 Pompeii. 1964. When the excavation was started, the area was covered with dense planting. It was decided, before clearing the entire area, to make a trial excavation and just to scrape down to the original ground layer.
